SAME WORLD EDU KIT
Contents, Class activities and Online Resources for Educators
Primary and Secondary school
Objectives and methodology
SAME WORLD is an educational project on the issues of climate justice and environmental migrations. This kit will help to talk about these issues in class with content created by experts from different disciplines (geography, anthropology, sociology, agronomy, economics, ecology ...) and with many activities such as role-playing games, mathematical exercises, art workshops and others to be realized with students. The content and activities were divided into three interconnected macro-areas:
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE – 4 Units and Activities
CLIMATE CHANGE – 4 Units and Activities
ENVIRONMENTAL MIGRATION – 4 Units and Activities
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
- Understand
In the Units you can find 60 chapters created by experts. Each chapter provides information, data, graphics and images. The chapters are interconnected, and there are many references to explore inside. An extensive glossary and an broad bibliography provide further stimulus.
- Change attitude
Our content helps to understand the importance of our change of attitude on the issues of environmental justice, climate change and environmental migration. In each unit there is a menu of activities for kids that help to reflect, as well as promoting direct experiences. The activities are organized by subjects: writing, mathematics, science, art, workshops.
- BE ACTIVE
Kids are involved in the production of communication materials. Posters, pictures and videos that will be valued as communication materials in the website, to motivate kids to excellence and to feed the project with their voices, so that it can resonate in the school, in the family, the local community...
Educational and pedagogical objectives
- provide one comprehensive tool for teachers;
- promote an interdisciplinary approach to the subject;
- promote an experiential and active approach
- stimulate kids to develop conscious behaviors and a critical attitude;
- stimulate direct production and distribution of content (peer to peer learning);
- activate strategies of problem solving and creative thinking
- stimulate different intelligences and diverse talents in kids (Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence);
- introduce kids works that are little known in the field of humanistic and scientific research (“our team” section).
OUR METHODOLOGY
Multidisciplinary approach
Each unit was made with experts in different fields, allowing to analyze the subject from different perspectives: geography, anthropology, sociology, agronomy, economics, ecology.... This also facilitates the understanding of the disciplinary interconnections. Activities are differentiated in order to be included in the curricular work of the several school subjects. Different disciplines (language, history, geography, mathematics, science, art) can be connected to the activities, facilitating joint work and continuity between teachers.
Scientific board supervision
The scientific board, composed of an interdisciplinary team of experts, oversaw all the contents of the kit.
Multimedia approach
We have involved experts from many disciplines and we asked them to create texts that integrated tools and multimedia content from the Web: images, graphics, videos, websites and online documents. Teachers have thus much diversified and selected web material.
The balance of Theoretical and Practical Activities
We gave equal importance to the development of content and to the development of activities to be implemented in the classroom. We provide a comprehensive tool to facilitate the task of teacher updating.
Content Topic example: General information, Documents, Research line, Facts and Data, Diagrams, Maps and Visualizations, links and online documents, Questions and answers, Documentary and Video reference.
School activities example: Practical experiment, Relational workshops, Experiment, Creative workshops, art content production, multimedia content production, Dissemination, Ethical dilemma, Writing Reports, Public speech.
All activities are already set by age: 9+ / 11+ / 14+
Narrative development
Each Unit is concatenated with the other according to a sequential narrative. Each macro-theme is in fact developed in 4 Units. The first Unit explains the general theme, the 2nd and 3rd explain the current situation, the 4th talks about the outlook of what might happen, "What can happen?". Activities to be implemented in school are the answer to "What can we do? Raise awareness, create, act, verify, and disseminate”.
Multiple brains, multiple talent
The kit offers diversified activities to allow the development of the kids’ different talents: capacity to develop oral and written productions, drawing, math, public reading and relational games. Following the principles of “Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences” we offer several activities that can stimulate teachers of different disciplines and the different intelligences of children. We divided the tasks according to: Writing and reading, mathematics, science, art and creativity workshops.
Active and experiential approach
The educational proposals go in the direction of personal and direct experience, aiming at taking responsibility for one’s actions. It suggests the adoption of educational interactive facilitating effective communication, game-changing approaches to start adopting alternative points of view, in transcultural perspective .
Open questions
The educational kit does not offer closed, complete, definitive answers, because at the moment they simply do not exist. What we can do is clarify which researches are ongoing, and highlight the questions on which experts, NGOs, international associations are working. For teachers and kids we provide a methodology and some food for thought and research.
We hope that all this may facilitate the reader and stimulate the birth of new ideas for "a school as big as the world"! (Gianni Rodari)
All the best
