This paper addresses some key points regarding this issue; first, it reflects on some of the most recent arguments in the international debate on environmentally induced migration. By doing so, several questions shall be answered: how severe is the problem of (expected) environmentally induced migration from a global perspective, and what do we know about the complex linkages between environmental factors and migration? Furthermore, how can environmental migration be classified according to the different environmental factors that are impacting human livelihoods and what are its implications? Reflecting on the current literature in different disciplines dealing with this issue, this paper finally comes up with some policy recommendations on how to face and govern environmentally induced migration on several levels.

In recent years the rate of rural-urban migration has become alarming as more people drift into the urban centres from the rural areas; it is against this backdrop that this paper examined the causes and effects of rural-urban migration in Borno state with particular reference to Maiduguri Metropolis. A survey was carried out amongst 150 respondents drawn from within the metropolis and the results indicates that the major causes of rural urban migration are; search for better education, employment, and business opportunities. Others are identified as poverty, unemployment, famine, and inadequate social amenities in the rural areas. While some of the effects of rural-urban migration are; rural-urban migration brings pressure on urban housing and the environment, high rate of population growth in the urban centres also lessens the quality of life, overpopulation encourages crime rate in the society and rural-urban migration slows down the pace of development of the rural areas. It is recommended that the Government should strive to provide social amenities and facilities in the rural areas and also provide jobs for the citizens in the rural areas. In addition to this Vocational training centres should be established in the rural centres for training of the productive youths for self emplyment.

A World Bank study on climate change and migration. Climate change and migration are major concerns in the MENA region, yet the empirical evidence on the impact of climate change and extreme weather events on migration remains limited. Information is broadly lacking on how households in vulnerable areas perceive changes in the climate, how they are affected by extreme weather events, whether they benefit from community and government programs to help them cope with and adapt to a changing climate, and how these conditions influence the decision of household members to migrate, either temporarily or permanently. This introductory chapter summarizes briefly the main results of the study which relied on existing data as well as focus groups and new household surveys collected in 2011 in Algeria, the Arab Republic of Egypt, Morocco, the Syrian Arab Republic, and the Republic of Yemen

A collection of articles and case studies about disasters and displacement and climate change, issued in the Forced Migration review. Existing national, regional and international legal regimes respond to only some of the protection concerns arising from displacement in the context of disasters. Crafting an appropriate response will demand a cross-sectoral approach – technical and scientific, political, humanitarian, human rights and developmental, among others – that addresses different forms of human mobility (displacement, migration and planned relocation).

There is empirical evidence that local environmental problems and low per capita income are geographically correlated. Most of what is written about linkages between environmental degradation and poverty focuses on why the poor use their natural resources in an unsustainable manner. This paper emphasizes first the damage which environmental degradation does to the poor. Next it reviews the standard environmental economics explanation for why the poor accept high levels of pollution, and argues that some notion of power must be added to the standard analysis. Then it examines the role of high discount rates, rapid population growth, incentive structures and institutions in the poverty-environment link. Finally, some general policy conclusions regarding poverty and environmental degradation are drawn.

Human security will be progressively threatened as the climate changes. Human insecurity almost never has single causes, but instead emerges from the interaction of multiple factors Climate change is an important factor threatening human security through undermining livelihoods (2) compromising culture and identity ; increasing migration that people would rather have avoided ; andchallenging the ability of states to provide the conditions necessary for human security.

Migration and Climate Change provides the first authoritative overview of the relationship between climate change and migration, bringing together both case studies and syntheses from different parts of the world. It discusses policy responses, normative issues and critical per- spectives from the point of view of human rights, international law, political science, and ethics, and addresses the concepts, notions and methods most suited to confronting this complex issue. The book con- stitutes a unique and thorough introduction to one of the most discussed but least understood consequences of climate change and brings together experts from different disciplines, including anthropology, climatology, demography, geography, law, political science and sociology, providing a valuable synthesis of research and debate.

Climate change has become a major concern for the international community. Among its consequences, its impact on migration is the object of increasing attention from both policy-makers and researchers. Yet, knowledge in this field remains limited and fragmented. This paper therefore provides an overview of the climate change – migration nexus: on the basis of available empirical findings, it investigates the key issues at stake, including the social and political context in which the topic emerged; states? policy responses and the views of different institutional actors; critical perspectives on the actual relationship between the environment and (forced) migration; the concepts and notions most adequate to address this relationship; gender and human rights implications; as well as international law and policy orientations.

A growing interest in the migration-development nex us has led to an increase in research on the subject. Expanded efforts to collect and analyze da ta 2 have resulted in significant progress in the understanding of migration aspirations (economic, r isk diversification and environmental factors etc.). The consequences of movement on receiving an d sending countries (remittances, social effects, and transnational networks) and the role o f development in fueling migration are also better grasped. But understanding of the highly com plex system of demographic, economic, social and environmental factors remains incomplete.

Recorded testimonies from people who have moved as a result of climate-linked disasters. By exploring these stories we can answer questions about how climate change is creating new patterns of migration and displacement. We can also ask how life on a hotter planet might mean living with new kinds of disasters, and coping with the displacement they create.

There is much controversy surrounding the poverty-environmental degradation nexus. The predominant school of thought argues that poverty is a major cause of environmental degradation and if policy makers want to address the environmental issues, then they must first address the poverty problem. Another school of thought argues that this causal link is too simplistic and the nexus is governed by a complex web of factors. In this paper, a formal structure for analyzing the complex web of factors is formulated and used to review the existing literature on the links between poverty and the degradation of four natural resource sectors. The analysis highlights the institutional and market failures which encourage unsustainable activities, which in turn forces some income groups into poverty. Another important factor is the role of conflicts between different agents (income groups) in the poverty-environmental degradation nexus. The analysis also highlighted the presence of feedback loops between environmental degradation and poverty.

China’s rural -to - urban migration has affected 12.6 million school - age rural children who have migrated with their parents and another 22 million who have been left behind by their migrant parents. Not enough is known, either theoretically or empirically, about the causal impact of migration on the wellbeing of this large number of Chinese children affected by migration. We conceptualize two counterfactual models to understand the causal impact of migration on children. We draw upon data from the 2010 baseline survey of the China Family Panel Studies, a nationally representative, annual longitudinal survey of Chinese communities, families, and individuals. We poolthe origin-destination child samples to form appropriate comparisons and apply propensity score matching methods to estimate the average treatment effects for the treated. We find significant positive effects of child migration on their objective well- being but no negative effects on their subjective well-being. We also find little difference between the left-behind and non-migrant children across multiple life domains. The findings highlight the important role of migration in narrowing the longstanding rural-urban gap in child development in China.

“Deep water” is the theatre show realized by CIES Onlus within the SAME WORLD project.
The show is one of the sensitization and educational activities carried out by the SAME WORLD consortium with the aim to actively involve citizenship and students therefore it has been conceived as an interactive performance on the theme of environmental justice, that calls for the active participation of the audience.
Its first version, directed by Valentina Di Odoardo (CIES Onlus) was staged on the 20th October 9:00 pm at Cascina Triulza (Auditorium) with different repeat performances on the same premises and also in Rome and Villa San Giovanni.
The show was adapted to different regional and National contexts and was put on stage in Milan, Hungary (Artemissziò Foundation) and Gernany (Arche-Nova). The Slovenian partner Humanitas chose to adapt a previous interactive theater play realized by Cies (One-way ticket) to realize an interactive play on the present refugees’ crisis “Through the refugee’s eyes”.
